If You Have High Blood Pressure

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, it is imperative that you follow your doctor's instructions regarding diet, physical activity, behavior modification, and medication he or she may have prescribed.
High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart and kidney diseases and stroke. This means that having high blood pressure increases your chance (or risk) of getting heart or kidney disease, or of having a stroke.

Fortunately, you can find out if you have high blood pressure by having your blood pressure checked regularly. If it is high, you can take steps to lower it. By following your doctor's recommendations, you will be able to control your blood pressure.

Following are tips that might help you work with your doctor in lowering your blood pressure:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Eat foods low in fat and cholesterol.

  • Avoid regular alcohol consumption.

  • Quit smoking.

  • Use salt moderately.

  • Engage in regular, moderate physical activity -- 30 minutes per day.

  • Take any medication as prescribed by your doctor. Potassium supplements or foods rich in potassium may be recommended by your doctor as well.
