Percutaneous Transmyocardial Revascularization

Percutaneous transmyocardial revascularization, or PMR,  is a less-invasive variation on the transmyocardial revascularization procedure. A catheter-based procedure, PMR is performed using a laser catheter, which is positioned inside the heart from an entry site in the femoral artery.

Like angioplasty, PMR requires no chest incision or general anesthesia, and the entire procedure is performed from within the heart. The laser is used to create tiny openings in the heart muscle so that blood flow through the heart extends to tissues served by blocked coronary arteries. The procedure is used as an alternative for patients who cannot undergo other surgical procedures or for whom other procedures have provided no benefit.
